Is chair yoga effective?

Modestly. Small trials show chair yoga can ease pain and lift mood, especially for people who can’t stand to exercise (Park et al., 2017). The largest trial, in 454 adults aged 65 and over, found no clear change in overall quality of life (Gentle Years Yoga trial), and chair-based exercise hasn’t been shown to improve balance (Klempel et al., 2021).

What it’s good for

What it won’t do

Who benefits most

People who can’t stand safely to exercise: wheelchair users, people recovering from a stroke, and people whose knees or hips make standing exercise hard. Seated tai chi helped mood in wheelchair users (Hsu et al., 2016) and arm function after stroke (Zhao et al., 2022).

How to get more from it

Do a little most days rather than a lot once a week, and add standing balance exercises if you can stand safely.
